Can a strategy game really work on a phone?
Strategy is the genre I was most skeptical about on mobile. These games were built for mice, keyboards, and big monitors. Cramming all that onto a phone sounds like a recipe for frustration.
And yet. Playing Iron Dominion changed my mind. The trick is that good mobile strategy games simplify without dumbing down. They cut the busywork and keep the decisions, which is exactly what a small screen demands.
Real-time battles are harder to pull off than turn-based ones, because things happen while your thumb is in the way. The solution most good games land on is slower pacing and generous unit selection. It's a different rhythm than the desktop version, but it works.
My advice for newcomers: start with the skirmish or quick-match modes rather than a sprawling campaign. You'll learn the systems faster and figure out if the genre clicks for you on a phone.
